JONAH — The Orthodox Life

Orthopraxy

An ancient Way for a modern world.

Orthopraxy simply means that right belief must become lived practice. This is not about becoming perfect. It is about becoming honest. It is about falling and getting up again. It is about learning to cooperate with God's grace.

Orthodoxy is not simply something to believe.
It is a Way to be lived.

What follows is not a programme to complete. It is a shape of life, received and handed on, that Christians have walked for two thousand years — and that can be begun today, slowly and imperfectly.

01

Prayer

Learning to become attentive to God.

Prayer is not a technique for obtaining outcomes. It is standing before God honestly, in few words and often. A short rule kept faithfully every morning and evening does more than an ambitious rule abandoned within a week.

02

Repentance

The courage to turn around.

Repentance is not shame or self-hatred; it is a change of mind and a change of direction. It assumes we will fall. The Christian life is largely the practice of getting up again without despair.

03

Watchfulness

Recognising thoughts before they become actions.

The Fathers speak of watching the thoughts that arrive at the door of the heart. We learn to notice a thought, to name it, and to refuse it hospitality — long before it hardens into habit.

04

The Passions

Understanding what pulls us away from freedom.

A passion is a good desire grown disordered — anger, lust, vanity, gluttony, avarice, despondency, pride. They are not simply moral failures to be scolded; they are wounds to be healed patiently.

05

Fasting

Learning that we do not have to obey every desire.

Fasting trains the will in a small, bodily, measurable way so that it can hold in larger ones. It is not a diet, and it is not earning anything. It is practice in saying no with love.

06

Discipline

Building a life ordered towards what is good.

Sleep, work, silence, attention, service. Grace does not compete with order — it works through it. Most transformation happens in unremarkable, repeated days.

07

Community

We were never meant to walk alone.

The Christian life is not a private project. It is lived in the Church, with a priest or spiritual father, and among people who know us well enough to tell us the truth.

08

The Holy Mysteries

Where healing is given, not achieved.

Confession and Communion are not rewards for the successful. They are the medicine of the Church for the wounded, given freely and received in humility.

Sometimes the medicine that heals us is bitter.

The goal is not simply to feel better. The goal is transformation.
